What Happened When He Tried On Everything Anna Picked
This is Part 2 of a five-part StyldLife Stories series following one real client’s styling journey. In Part 1, stylist Anna completed a closet audit and mapped out a direction: casual, chic, elevated. This installment picks up a few weeks later, when everything Anna sourced started arriving — and the two got on a video call to try it all on together.
“Damn, boy.”
That’s what our client’s son said, walking by mid-fitting. Not exactly a StyldLife tagline — but it’s the reaction every stylist is quietly hoping for.
The Unboxing
Packages had been arriving for days — jeans, jackets, sneakers, belts, button-downs, a blazer. Rather than just mailing over a mood board, Anna got on a video call and had him try on piece after piece in real time, so every keep-or-return call happened together instead of guessed at from a photo.
The first win: a pair of jeans he’d already tried once. “I approve the jeans. I like how they actually fit you,” Anna confirmed early on — an easy keep that set the tone for the rest of the call.
The Base Layer Philosophy
A recurring theme: not every piece needs to be exciting — some just need to be right. A plain white tee became one of the session’s most important pieces. “This t-shirt looks so good on you, it makes you look taller and slimmer, all those lines are elongating your body,” Anna pointed out — explaining that a great base layer is what makes everything layered on top of it work.
The same logic applied to a brown suede jacket that became an instant favorite. Layered over the white tee with the right sneakers, it pulled the whole look together — proof that the closet-audit strategy from Part 1 (fewer, better pieces that mix and match) was already paying off.
Fashion Sneakers vs. Gym Sneakers
One small distinction did a lot of heavy lifting in this session: the difference between sneakers you work out in and sneakers you wear out. “These sneakers are called fashion sneakers, or lifestyle sneakers,” Anna explained — a category our client hadn’t really separated in his own closet before.
A pair of white sneakers earned an easy, immediate keep. “White sneakers, they should be in every wardrobe. It’s like a really good base for everything to wear with everything,” Anna said — the sneaker equivalent of the white tee.
The One Style Note That Wouldn’t Budge
Not everything was a yes. A pair of loafers with an elongated, almond-shaped toe came up twice in this session — and got vetoed both times. “I don’t love that part of it… they just seem kind of, yeah, blah,” he said. The takeaway for Anna: a rounder, more substantial toe shape for future shoe picks — a small preference, but exactly the kind of detail that makes future rounds faster.
What’s Next
By the end of the fitting, a clear keep pile had formed: the white tee, the suede jacket, the white sneakers, a blazer, and the jeans. But sizing wasn’t fully settled yet — a jacket needed a side-by-side comparison between large and extra-large, and the jeans needed a trip to the tailor.
Check back next month for Part 3, when we go inside the actual fitting process — how a stylist and client size things remotely, photo by photo.
