With the weather cooling down and school picking back up, I met with Erikajoy Garner for a hairstyling appointment to determine up and coming hair trends that you will fall for this autumn season. Whether you want to cut your hair or learn a few new dos, StyldLife Stylists can help, so schedule an appointment today!
Erikajoy and I began talking about the basic hair rules when applying heat. She explained that a lot of people tend to damage their hair by turning the heat to the maximum temperature when, in reality, the lower settings work just as well. When people apply the higher heat, it causes damage and even makes hair look frizzy and dry for many of us, it’s easy to confuse that damage with seasonal weather or hormonal changes. To combat this, she stressed how important it is to use heat protectants any time you are using any tool on your hair.
When we began curling my hair, Erikajoy recommended a curling wand since beach curls never go out of style. At the time, I didn’t have a wand, so I resorted to my basic curling iron with the clamp. We sectioned off my hair and went by rows, wrapping the hair away from the face to get the flowy outward-facing curls.

After we had finished curling my hair, we pulled the top layer away from my face and sectioned it into a single loose French braid, which could also be separated into two braids. Either way you style it, make sure to keep it loose and wispy. We were going for an everyday, effortless look, and not an athletic gymnast braided look (which you could also do but maybe for the gym). Braids are such a simple way to dress up your hairstyle, whether you’re going to the grocery store or an event. Small little braids to accessorize your hair and frame your face are even becoming popular too. They even double as a way to mask dirty day two hair that you slept on already-- don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.

After the braids, Erikajoy walked through styling those trendy top knots that seem to always compliment the fall scarf look. It elongates your head and acts as a fun way to keep your hair out of your face. Especially since most of us are wearing masks, it’s a great way to bring attention to your eyes since you can’t hide behind the hair.

Now, this next hairstyle I never thought would re-emerge, but alas, I was trying to execute the perfect swooping side part. I was surprised at how elegant of a hairstyle it was since the last time I did it was in 7th grade when I wore denim capris and watched ‘Pretty Little Liars’. This swoop adds so much vintage Hollywood vibes to your entire look that a stroll down the street makes you look like you’re walking down the red carpet.

For our last style, Erikajoy walked me through a simple updo since they are effortless and chic when your hair is curled. You can either do this with fresh curls or the next day if your hair is still intact. Erikajoy explained to me that you should be able to keep your curls for at least a day or two afterward if you are diligent in letting them cool before brushing through them and spraying them with a light-hold hair spray.
It was so fun meeting and talking with Erikajoy. After the meeting, I had a newfound confidence in my hair styling abilities, especially with my braiding techniques, so I’m super excited to try these looks out on the street!
