As High School Musical’s Sharpay Evans once said, “Out with the old, and in with the new, goodbye clouds of gray hello skies of blue”, it is that time of year again where we reflect as we wrap up presents along with the year. Although 2020 was a rollercoaster no one signed up for, we embraced all the good news, bad news and cute shoes.
Even if we were not leaving our houses as often and probably rotating the same three shirts every week (hopefully it wasn't just me) fashion waited for no one.
New trends emerged and were loved by the masses, even from the comfort of their couches. But all things must come to an end, so here are the fashion trends we are thankful for and the fashion trends we are happy to watch as we close out the year.
Goodbye, Chunky Shoes:

Ah yes, what your grandfather has approved of for years and why you now understand the hype only lasted for a solid year. Although we do love a statement piece, we also love not hearing every thudding step you take as you walk down the street.
Goodbye, Midi Skirts

Raise your glasses for the silk, satin, knitted, and the infamous leopard midi skirt. The hot commodity burned bright, and out so fast you might not have seen the Instagram account dedicated to the iconic cheetah spotted animal skirts that everyone seemed to need.
Goodbye, Mom Jeans

Although these remain a classic, the need for these jeans has shifted into a need for just a solid pair of jeans that accentuate your legs and booty. It really just depends on you and your body type. Mom jeans will always give you that comfort (it’s a given with a name like that) however, the high waisted and baggy fit has had its time in the sun.
Goodbye, Long dangly accent necklaces

Did anyone actually love these glorified lanyards with a pretty keychain charm at the end? I am all for flaunting your initials but I draw the line when the necklace chain is longer than where my hair will ever be and don’t even get me started with the ironwork or crystals.
Like 2020, I have been ready for these trends to be over, so we can gladly leave those behind and look forward to new trends. Some incoming looks have been involving different pieces that we think will be the stars of the scene in 2021.
Hello, Narrow Pants

Leather, patterned, satin, canvas whatever you want, make it straight-leg pants. Slowly but surely we are inching towards the skinny jeans, but these pants have a better outcome and are more fashionable.
Hello, Long Coats

Whether you want to stay warm for winter or hide your pajamas while running to the store, long coats want to be your new bestie. The most popular being the brown coat that you can pair with a gray hoodie or tights and a nice blouse. It’s like a ‘choose your own adventure’ everyday with an ending brighter than 2020.
Hello, Stackable Jewelry and Rings

GOLD GOLD GOLD. Rings, chains, and anklets. People are loving to stack these, keep them on from day to night, and do what jewelry is made for: wearing. The rings make a statement while the necklaces and anklets are allowed to be mixed, combined, and sometimes even hidden under that long coat you *should* probably be wearing.
Hello, Strappy Sandals

If you are going to step out of your home for your weekly trip to the grocery store, or necessary serotonin boost at your local coffee shop, then you should be stepping out in these low effort, high fashion heels, that won’t break your ankles.
However you are reflecting on this past year, applaud yourself for making it through, staying safe, and keeping up with the fashion trends. With these incoming accessories and styles, I am already feeling hopeful about what the future of 2021 holds.
